چکیده

Introduction To predict the evolution of a Geological Disposal Facility, it is necessary to understand the interaction between a number of key features and process and its impact on the long-term behaviour. Central to these issues are the mechanisms and process that govern the movement of gases in a repository. Linking the gas transport to the stress-strain response of the engineering systems barriers remains challenging particularly from an experimental point of view. Therefore, this paper aims to shed light on the volume change response of different potential host clayey rocks -Boom Clay formation from Belgium and Opalinus Clay and ‘Brauner Dogger’ formations from Switzerlandduring gas injection and dissipation experiments though a comparative study.

Modeling of Gas Migration through Low-permeability Clay Using Information on Pressure and Deformation from Fast Air Injection Tests

The characterization of gas migration through low-permeability clay formations has been a focus of R&D programs for radioactive waste disposal, which is also of great importance for shale-gas exploration, and cap-rock behavior of hydrocarbon reservoirs and CO2 sequestration. Laboratory tests on Opalinus clay cores from a shallow borehole in the Mont Terri Underground Research Laboratory (URL) a...

Paleoclimate Reconstruction during Pabdeh, Gurpi, Kazhdumi and Gadvan Formations (Cretaceous-Tertiary) Based on Clay Mineral Distribution

Paleoclimate was reconstructed by the clay mineral assemblages of shale units of Pabdeh (PaleoceneOligocene), Gurpi (Upper Cretaceous), Kazhdumi (Albian-Cenomanian) and Gadvan (Aptian-Neocomian) formations in the Bangestan anticline. To compare with clay minerals assemblages in these formations, selected samples also taken from available formations in drilled wells in Ahvaz, Marun, Karanj, and ...

Evaluation of Reactive Clay in Indian Shale

Shale formations are composed of clays, feldspars, carbonates, and quartz as major ingredients. Among all the constituents, clays are the most important parameter from an application point of view because of their possibly sensitive nature; they are further categorised as migrating (illite, kaolinite, and chlorite) and reactive (smectite and mixed layers) clays. Smectite is always considered as...

The Channeling (Microventing) Phenomenon in Young Marine Sediments

The objective of the present research is to explore the causes of microventing, a phenomenon generally occurring in cohesive sediments during their deposition and consolidation. Microvents are characterized by volcano-like formations, remnants of the expulsion of fluid and sediment along a vertical channel through the sediment layer. The size of these vent formations ranges from the order of mi...

An Improvement in Cation Exchange Capacity Estimation and Water Saturation Calculation in Shaly Layers for One of Iranian Oil Fields

Water saturation and cation exchange capacity are the most significant parameters used to calculate a hydrocarbon zone potential. In clean formations, by applying the famous Archie model, which assumes that in the formation the only electric conductor is the formation water, the water saturation can be calculated. Additionally, in shaly sand formations this assumption may not be true as the ion...
